Advent Vega
Advent Vega-Cheap Android tablet unusual; both cheap Android tablet is a different matter. Advent's slate Vega - sales through DSG's PC World, Currys and Dixons in the UK - Android bucks the trend with a low sticker price of £ 249 ($ 395) and a decent hardware specifications, including dual-core processor NVIDIA Tegra 2. It's a combination that has seen the struggle to keep Vega DSG in stock for more than an hour at a time, but this is really cheap Froyo slate we've been waiting for? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Hardware

Compared with the brushed metal of the iPad or sturdy compactness of the Galaxy Tab, Vega and the plastic construction feels more plain boring design. However, it is also about half the price of their rivals, so we're more forgiving of bland aesthetics. The rear panel sounds a bit hollow when tapped, and squeezed in the middle cause distortions in the LCD; edge - where you're more likely to be tense - is more sturdy. At 275 x 177 x 14 mm it is quite thin, although it will be longer (and narrower) than the iPad.

Advent Vega unboxing & hands-on:

In front is a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 resolution screen with capacitive touch screen, and we were not too impressed with the selection of panel Advent. The color is natural, and it's bright screen, but poor viewing angles, especially the vertical angle. Seen dead-on in landscape orientation and it was good, but put Vega on the table or next to you on the couch and there is a large image distortion, especially along the bottom edge (residential shortcut bar on the homescreen. Back to portrait orientation, and the shallow angle even more frustrating, the website suffered from glare and color changes.

Bar 1.3 megapixel webcam - which takes stills unpleasant fuzzy - Vega bezel completely naked, with all the hardware control is pushed to the edge of the slate. On the top there is a microphone, power / lock button, a switch to lock the screen orientation and button back, while walking on the right side there is a volume rocker, headphone socket, microSD slot (with 4GB card loaded), USB port and HDMI port, along with connectors Power. A docking connector is at the lower end, although so far no accessories that take advantage of it, and a pair of stereo speakers in the rear. No home, search or special menu key, as you would expect to find on Android devices, although the long press on the back button to call the context menu, and press the power button on the length of the house offers as an option.
Advent Vega Tablet

Limited wireless connectivity WiFi b / g and Bluetooth; Advent tells us that the 3G-enabled Vega is in the pipeline, but this is the first model does not have a cellular modem. While that does not present many problems for home use, it has no impact on what the software can be used Advent, more on that in the next section.

Software

Vega score points for using the Android 2.2 Froyo, rather than the previous version of the Google platform, even if you've come to the tablet from the Android smartphone then you will probably find a lot missing. Specifications required for Google Android device - which Vega did not reach - means the tablet does not have access to Android Market, together with all the custom Google applications like Gmail, Google Maps and Google Voice. In fact, a surprising application launcher naked: outside the box you get a browser (with multitouch pinch-zooming but no Flash), calculator, camera app (for use with a webcam), hours, WHSmiths ebooks applications, email, gallery, iFileManager, music, search, Sound Recorder and a shortcut to the portal online help Vega. There is no native PDF or Office file viewer, though, which means the download instructions and guidance from the actual portal can not be read in the Vega itself.

Third party applications can be retrieved through their raw APK file -. You can browse to them on sites like GetJar.com, download and install them with no problem - or you can choose to store third-party applications, such as SlideMe or AppsLib. However, where Samsung took the core Android 2.2 experience and drive to match the larger Galaxy Tab screen, Vega feels like a step backwards in comparison.

Changes to Froyo small Advent, the most obvious is to accommodate the missing hardware. A toolbar at the top of the screen has a shortcut home at the far left and the menu / back buttons on the far right. There's also WiFi indicator, battery and clock. Battery gauge can be slow to respond; few times we hit the power button to glance at how much juice is left, then had to wait as a measurement tool is updated to the latest figures. Five mock homescreen panel to fill the absence of their application, and a row of shortcut persistent along the link below to settings, mail, browser, My Media and then Facebook, Twitter and YouTube sites.

The lack of applications is frustrating, because we can not really fault the performance of these Tegra 2. Browser whip together well, making even complex sites quickly, and multitouch zooming do not suffer from stuttering or lag. Rotation of the screen (in all but the homescreen, which is locked to landscape orientation) as well as fast. Angry Birds -. Install an APK file that you downloaded in the browser and then install it manually - it looks great on a 10-inch screen and play without any problems. We are only able to access YouTube through m.youtube.com mobile website - the full site will not recognize the Flash Player Plugin installed Advent 10.1 - and the quality is mixed.

Multimedia playback proved frustrating. We first tried to load the selection AVI, DivX and other video clips to the Vega format microSD (microSD to SD adapter included in box), but the tablet proved reluctant to display the file browser. Instead, we must use the application VegaMedia, with the sync manager companion PC (Windows only) that you drag files to and automatically push them to the tablet. We can not see any change in the format along the way - literally a copy from your computer to the tablet - but done in a way iFileManager application can view the media.

The type of file, MKV HD clips for Vega proved too much to handle, but an SD MKV no trouble at all. DivX and MP4 is also handled with ease - the last in HD, even. HDMI output works fine, showing not only the media play but mirroring everything on the screen Vega, still, you're stuck in the same 1024 x 600 resolution when browsing around, so it can look underwhelming in Full HD panel.

Vega safety may be in the hands of Android homebrew community, and already there is at least one alternative that adds ROM unauthorized access to Android Market along with all the usual Google applications. The process of rooting and Vega was easy to install, and the end result is a much more flexible slate.

Battery

Advent would suggest you look around 6.5hrs HD movie playback or up to 16hrs audio playback (with the screen) of the full cost of the Vega. In practice, a mixed-use - especially browsing - we managed to use a full day before the battery runs out, even while in standby power draw is higher than in the Galaxy Tab or iPad. Last night, Vega dropped from the 93-percent to 69 percent with no use whatsoever.

Wrap-up

Advent Vega-There was a time - browsing the web, for example - when we have to remind ourselves how low Vega is, given its performance lives up to the tablet is much more expensive. At other times, cutting costs required to achieve the prices that raised his head, with a passionate point of view of the display to a certain frustration. Read text or view images or video is simply a more enjoyable experience by displaying iPad or Galaxy Tab.

Out of the box, there's a sense that you get what you pay for. Advent can do yourself a big favor by throwing in a few custom applications for network calls, IM or social video, or by preloading stuff like Fring or Skype. In contrast, there is a webcam which will only be used to take stills vanity and a large-scale processor underused.

Spend some time playing around, but - what are the basics of installing a third-party application store, or go the route of flashing the ROM is more complex alternative - and far more attractive proposition Vega. The interesting thing seems to have caught the Android dev community, for whom the limitations of Advent is no real consequence. Mainstream users, however, may be found Vega underwhelming in its pure form.
