Reasons To Buying

I am a student just about to start university, and is looking for a laptop to take with me, because I do not want to have to take my desktop that will be large and comfortable. I want this computer mainly for word processing, web browsing, burning dvds / cds and some Photoshop work. I do not intend to play games on it. Other laptops I considered before purchasing this particular model is ASUS A8JC of shoplaptop.co.uk and HP DV2036 from comet.co.uk. After visiting the Micro Anvika and playing with the same model that these (A8F and DV2058ea) with the same chassis', I found the ASUS quite thin and there are a lot of flex in the lid. Also, the laptop is pretty cheap looking, and not really to my taste. HP however is a machine looks very slick who definitely very stylish and made with a well. Build quality is very good. But I do not think HD is slightly larger additional value £ 50, plus the fact that it has an AMD processor that I'm not sure.

Build and Design

The Samsung R40 is made entirely of plastic, and feels quite sturdy. Black and silver color scheme, with the bottom of the chassis and the back cover of silver, and the bottom and the regions around the black screen. Personally I find the design quite nice and elegant looking. There is also virtually no wobble in the lid, the hinge feels very solid. I can lift the laptop by one corner of the bottom with little if any flex in the body, though of course I would not do this every day. However, there is a real flex and rotate the lid, and the ripple appears at the side of the screen and a few at the top when the rear lid is pressed, although it is quite hard. In everyday use although I do not think this would cause great concern. Considering this is a budget laptop, I do not expect superior build quality as what you'll find on the Thinkpad, and do not need you.

Similar to the Samsung X60, the bottom of the computer is stepped, with protruding feet on each of the 4 corners. This is good because it provides a better flow of air under the notebook to help dissipate heat more effectively. As a whole design very similar to the X60 it.

Because laptop this is quite large, there is quite a are many of space on main parts of the body, with a space in around keyboard, give quite visible minimalis. Laptops certainly does not look or feel cluttered. For a laptop this size I think the weight is about average, 2.7kg. I could have sat quite comfortably in my lap and work, and can easily carry it around. However, I not akan feel comfortable bring the in around with a my all the time, because the burden finally akan catch up my. Another small note is that the DVD drive is pretty thin when it is open, although this is no different from most other laptop drives DVD / CD.
Screen

Samsung R40 reviews
The screen on the R40 is a 15.4 "matte screen with a resolution of max. 1200 x 800. Before buying a laptop, I get the impression that the screen is a glossy, as this is what it says on the product page for the Samsung R40. However, because the new laptop alone was released, there is no product pages England, only German and Korea. So i was quite surprised when I opened it and find a view matte. However, I not are really annoyed about it, screen glossy akan better, but does not importantly Resolution the screen is the fairly standard in notebook size, and features Samsung's SuperBright technology .. It is pretty bright color screen with a sharp and clear, and has a very wide angle so that it has a lot of people sat round to watch the movie will not be a problem. There are eight levels of brightness You can choose to use a battery manager software, and I found that the brightness of 5 is enough. There does not seem to be some light leakage at the bottom of the screen, which is quite noticeable at times. Overall very good quality screen.

Speaker

Laptop has a built in speaker which is located just above the keyboard. These speakers, as expected in a notebook, not amazing, but enough for things like watching movies etc. I would recommend getting some travel or desktop speakers if you plan to use it as their only source of your audio and want to listen to music etc.

Processor and Performance

When performing everyday tasks like word processing and web browsing, this notebook is very fast and responsive, even when running multiple programs at one time. This is due to a dual core processor is installed on a machine capable of effectively doubling the workload of the processor at any given time. The notebook comes with Intel Core Duo T2300E processor with 1.66GHz clock speed. Very fast bootup time. Hard drive 80GB (formatted capacity 67.4GB) 5400 rpm hard and I feel fine for what I do. There is 1GB of PC2-4200 (533MHz) DDR2 RAM installed, which appears as just under 900MB for a 128MB graphics card to take it. To run XP, I think 1GB is the minimum, at least for future proofing yourself for the arrival of Vista, but also because of multitasking can often take more than 512MB. The overall performance is very sharp, although it can last for a few seconds on several occasions, but not too often.

Benchmark

I ran Super Pi program which records the time it takes for the processor to calculate Pi to 2 million digits.

I also ran 3DMark05 tests, and scored 602, the score is low but not surprising given the integrated graphics:

I also ran HD Tune 2:52 and obtained the following results for the drive MHV2080AH Fujitsu drive:

Graphic

R40 uses the ATI chipset instead of an Intel Centrino chipset. I've been told that when making this decision not akan affect your choice as the one-only difference between the the two is the on essentially sticker Centrino and branding You get with Intel.

Graphics card which used by this machine is the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M integrated card, which means be integrated into within motherboard. However, the card actually has 128MB of dedicated memory installed, which is unusual for an integrated card. Then borrow a further 128MB of system memory to make a total of 256MB. You can change the amount of system memory used in the ATI Catalyst control center, given a choice of 128 or 256MB. Amount of system memory shown in System Properties it will be a 896 or 768MB.
There are four types of 200m cards with different amounts of dedicated memory. But they are all advertised as the same card, along the lines of ATI Radeon Xpress 200M max. 128MB. By the because it be careful when you find a laptop with this card.

Heat and Noise

Heat and noise levels are important when choosing a laptop to buy. Fortunately, this laptop stays relatively cool and also pretty quiet. During the use of normal, laptop usually heats up slightly mainly in the corner left upper at which CPU located. This is also where the fan is located. Idle CPU temperature is usually around 50 degrees Celsius, and the hard drive of about 37 degrees. As already mentioned, there are feet on the bottom of the laptop leaving a small gap between the laptop and the working surface, which should allow for better air flow under the machine. I can use the laptop on my lap without the heat becomes uncomfortable. Areas where your hands rest when typing also get a little warm, under the more so, but again not convenient.
In the everyday environment, noise levels practically undetectable. In a quiet environment you can hear the roar of the hard drive and fan, but obviously not loud or annoying as my desktop can sometimes be.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Get used to a laptop keyboard can sometimes take a while, but for me it's not too hard with this one. There is no flex in the keyboard, that does not sag 'when you press the button, and lock on button is not pressed down. Each key feels individual and provide a satisfying click when pressed.
One of the things I noted about some recent notebooks here is that the function (Fn) key located on the bottom left corner of the keyboard, where the Ctrl key is usually found. It can be a bit difficult to get used to at first for people who use lots of keyboard shortcuts. The Fn key provides several shortcuts that are similar to those found in the Samsung X60:

Touchpad below the keyboard is small enough tactile and easy to use. It feels very similar to the main body of the laptop and has a matte feeling. There is a handy scroll function to the right side of the pad which can be a bit tricky to use at times because sometimes it does not respond as you expect. Personally I do not use the touchpad very much, and find the mouse much more comfortable.

Input and Output Ports

Laptop has the following ports:

4 USB 2.0 (two in rear, 2 on the left)
VGA on the back
TV-out (S-VHS) on the back
RJ-11 (modem) on the right
RJ-45 (LAN) in part the left
Headphone-out at part the left
Mic-in on the left
1 Type II PC Card in the left
DC-in at the back
Kensington Lock at rear
6-in-1 Multi Memory Card Slot on the front (stickTM Memory, Memory stick pro, SD, MMC, High Speed MMC)
Unfortunately, there is no firewire port.

Wireless Samsung R40

This laptop comes with wireless capabilities in building, and using Atheros (Super G) AR2423 chipset 802.11BG. Acceptance from wireless network who good and works with well. There is no built in Bluetooth module, and there is no infrared port.

Battery

Since I mainly use the laptop on the table with it connected to the mains, the battery is not so important when buying this laptop. Using the options set max battery 'in the battery manager software, the laptop is able to reach about 3 hours of battery life is very average. Batteries which used is your 6: 11.1V / 4000mAh (44.4Wh) unit, but you could buy separately an your 9: 11.1V / 7800mAh (86.58Wh) which akan increase the the battery life.

Operating Systems and Software

Machine comes preloaded with Microsoft XP Professional. There are two discs are provided, a system recovery disc and the other is labeled DVD media software system. One of the first things I did after turning on the laptop is to delete the preloaded software that comes with the laptop like Norton Antivirus is a large drain on system resources. Here is a list of software provided:

Norton AntiVirus,
Adobe Reader,
AVS Premium / Viewer,
Samsung Network Manager,
Battery Manager,
Plus updates,
Easy Box,
Firstware Pro,
Cyberlink DVD Solution
